Photography : Astronomy : The Mighty SOAR Telescope The SOAR 4m telescope perches proudly on Cerro Panchon. Distant mountain peaks shine white with snow but next to none of that precipitation ever reaches this area. The Atacama plateau is the driest place on Earth. This is good for telescopes in many ways. The most obvious is that the weather is stable and clear for most of the year. Additionally, astronomers want sharp clear images and water vapor tends to blur light and smear out images.
