Photography : Astronomy : Cloudsea Dawn

Dawn breaks over the PROMPT telescopes as they peer out into an ocean of clouds. Toward the end of observing on a telescope on Cerro Tololo in Chile, there was a rise in humidity and a decrease in image quality. No clouds were condensing, but the air was roiling around messing up our focus. Oh well, we thought, better luck next night. When we left the telescope after dawn, we found our mountain surrounded by an ocean of clouds! This was a sufficiently rare event on Cerro Tololo that even the mechanics came out to stare at the undulating cloud sea!

On a side note the PROMPT telescopes have the most amazing webcam site that lets you look all over Tololo!
